I am posting this as a reminder about spring art classes. There are still spaces left if you would like to enroll your child. The first class is Thursday, May 6. Here are the specifics about class:

Creation Station’s Community Artists
(K-5th Grade) School-age children will learn basic and advanced art techniques in a series of six one-hour art classes for grades K-5. We will paint, draw, and work with clay. Smocks and all art materials are provided during classes. We will also work on a group project throughout the six weeks that will be donated to a community organization. This program culminates in an awards ceremony where each artist will receive a gold medal and a Certificate of Achievement in Art. Parents, family, and friends are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony to support their young artist’s accomplishments.
CLASS FEE: $68/8 classes
CLASS LOCATION: Eye of the Eagle Art Center, 131 E. 1st Street, Clayton
CLASS TIME: Each Thursday from 6:15-7:15 PM

Track-Out Camps

Creation Station’s Travel the World Track-Out Art Camp
Registration is underway for Creation Station Track-Out Art Camps. Registration includes participation in the awards ceremony at the end of the week. All art supplies are included, but please provide your child with a snack and drink each day. Our camp theme is Travel the World. Campers will explore exotic locations around the world while handcrafting souvenirs from each travel destination. At the beginning of camp, passports will be issued to each camper with all the destinations for the week. At the end of each day, campers will get their passports punched for the destinations that we explored that day.

A special part of Creation Station Art Camp is creating community artwork. Each day we will work on artwork as a group to donate to our community. Campers will get to decide what type of art they will create and choose which community organization will receive their artwork. This is a special part of camp designed to develop your child’s self-esteem through the act of giving back to our community. This is a great opportunity for children to develop leadership skills and to learn to work together as a team.

This program culminates with an awards ceremony where each young artist will receive a Certificate of Achievement in Art and a gold medal. Our grand masterpiece will also finally be revealed. After the ceremony the community artwork will be donated to the local business or organization chosen by the community artists. Once their artwork is on display, children love to show their masterpiece to parents, other family members, and friends. Parents are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony to support their young artist’s contribution to our community through art.

New class added on Tuesday evening

Since Creation Station art classes on Thursday evenings only has one space left, I have added another evening to accommodate more of my students. I know several of you had prior commitments and were unable to register for Thursday classes, so hopefully you will be able to attend on Tuesdays. I think this class will fill up as quickly as the Thursday class, so please enroll as soon as possible. If you applied for a scholarship, your application will also be considered for this new class. Scholarship applications are still being accepted. If you have not applied yet, there is still time. Please feel free to pass this information along to anyone you think might be interested. Here are the specifics about the new class...

MORE ABOUT COMMUNITY ARTISTS:
Our theme for this season is Travel the World. Your child will explore exotic locations from around the world while handcrafting souvenirs from each travel destination. On the first day of class, each child will be issued a passport with all of the destinations for the entire season. After each class artists will get their passports stamped for that destination.

In addition to learning about other cultures, we also spend time celebrating our own community. We will work on artwork as a group to donate to deserving businesses and organizations that make our own area a better place to live. So far Creation Station Community Artists have donated artwork to an assisted-living community for seniors, a cancer-support center, and a local fire department.

Once all the details of the community art project have been finalized, the children work together as a group to design their community artwork from start to finish. The community art project gives children the chance to learn teamwork and develop leadership skills while honoring their own community.

This is also a great opportunity to boost a child’s self-esteem through the act of giving back. Clayton is such a wonderful place to grow up, and this art project gives kids the chance to say thanks to their community in their own creative way. It’s never too early to teach children to appreciate their own community. A child that is a respected and active part of their community is more likely to value their community throughout schooling and the rest of their life.

Scholarships for Fall Art Classes

I have heard from a lot of parents that they cannot afford art classes this school year with rising gas and food prices. I completely understand, and I don't want my students to miss out on art classes. Please consider applying for a scholarship for art classes. All families who would like to send their kids to art classes but can't fit it into their budget are encouraged to apply. Please email creationstation3@aol.com to get a scholarship application. Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and scholarship recipients will be notified by email no later than August 21. I would encourage all families that are interested to apply. This is a great opportunity for kids who would otherwise not be able to participate in art classes. If you know of a family who might be interested, please let them know. I have several full scholarships ready to be awarded, and I don't want the scholarships to go unused! I look forward to another colorful year at Creation Station art classes!

Parents, family, and friends are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony to support their young artist’s accomplishments. This program requires parents to remain at the center while their child attends art class.
ART EXPLORER CLASS FEE: $61/8 classes

Scholarships for Creation Station Summer Art Camps

Full scholarships are available for Creation Station Art Camps held in Clayton. Camp dates are July 21-25 from 1:30-3:30 or August 11-15 from 10:00-12:00. Scholarships will be awarded to families with financial need or other special circumstances. Individuals interested in applying must complete an application and registration form and mail to Creation Station by Monday, July 7th. The camp fee is $100/week for kids in grades K-5. Camps are held at Eye of the Eagle Art Center located at 131 East 1st Street in downtown Clayton. If you would like to request a scholarship application or if you would like to register your child without applying for a scholarship, please email creationstation3@aol.com or call 550-8135.

Creation Station's Spring Awards Ceremony in Selma

Young artists enrolled in Creation Station at Selma have really been working hard at art class. As this season ends, we will celebrate on May 20! The awards ceremony for Art Explorers will begin at 5:45pm, and the ceremony for Community Artists will begin at 7:00pm. We will hold our ceremonies at Selma Parks and Recreation office which is located beside the Selma Public Library. Please use the library parking lot.

In case your child loves art class, there are still opportunities to participate in Creation Station during the summer months. Creation Station offers seven weeks of summer art camp. I will accept registration at the awards ceremony in case anyone wants to register at that time. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email. Have a colorful day!

Travel the World Summer Art Camp-Registration is underway for Creation Station Summer Art Camps for grades K-5. Hi everybody,

I have been a bad blogger lately. This week I celebrated my 33rd birthday! I have been doing all of my favorite things to celebrate. I love to go to community festivals. Last weekend we went to The Strawberry Festival. I like to walk around and see what is going on in my own community. This weekend we are going to go to the Ham and Yam Festival in Smithfield. We went last year and had pretty good time. I hope the weather is nice so that we can go to the afternoon of bluegrass.

I have spent a lot of time cooking and eating my favorite foods, too! We went to two grocery stores just so that I could get ALL of the things I wanted to celebrate my birthday. I love to cook and bake, but this time I have made all of MY favorites.

We also spent a day gardening. We have a spring vegetable garden filled with beets, radishes, peas, and lettuce. We added some perennial herbs and flowers to our veggie garden that had sprouted up in unwanted places throughout our flower gardens. I can't wait to add our summer crops! Maybe sometime next week, we will get some time to do that.

I also love to clean and organize. It's hard to tell from the way my house looks, but I really do enjoy it. My husband started cleaning out our shed so that we can add a covered roof to one side of the shed. This was/is a huge job, so we will have to continue that project this weekend! For my birthday we made a special effort to keep the house spotless. I LOVE a clean house. It is SO RELAXING to have everything in its own space.

All of my students made my birthday wonderful! Some of my preschool kids tried to guess my age...they shouted out "13!". And I quickly said, "I'll take it...close enough!" I eventually fessed up to my real age, but I love to see how old they think I am.

It was a fantastic birthday week. I am so blessed to have such a fantastic life. It's even better than I dreamed it would be! I can't wait to see what this year has in store for me! Have a colorful year!

Our Green Earth

I am busy, busy, busy getting ready for Our Green Earth. Creation Station will be there from 1-3:30 on April 19 with free art activities. Here are a few activities I have planned:

I have had a tremendous response to Travel the World Summer Art Camps. In case you would like to sign your child up for camp, I will also accept summer camp registration and payment during the festival.

A new Creation Station art class for ages 4-8 will start in Clayton on April 10. We will meet for the next eight weeks from 6:00-7:00 on Thursdays. Class activities include painting, drawing, working with clay, and experimenting with other creative materials. This 8-week series will culminate in a student art exhibit and awards ceremony. It's time to register for Summer Art Camp

This summer there are seven one-week art camps held throughout Johnston and Wake County for K-5th grade. Each week of art camp features all new projects. Creation Station @ your child's school

I can tell summer is almost here. Over and over again I am asked the same questions from the parents of my spring art students...Does Creation Station travel? Will Creation Station come to my child's summer camp?

The answer to both questions is YES! Summer is my favorite (and busiest) season for Creation Station. It's really exciting when I get to work with so many kids out of school for the summer. I look forward to it all year! I am quick to let parents know how busy I get when everybody is on summer break. Creation Station's summer schedule is already almost full so don't wait too long to pass the word along to camp directors.

Camp directors and teachers may schedule art classes for their center by calling 550-8135. I appreciate it when my students spread the word about Creation Station. I love the chance to see my weekly students at their own schools. It's so much fun because they show me around their classroom and introduce me to all their friends. It's just as exciting for me! They make me feel like a celebrity!

Poetry Workshop with North Carolina Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer, Thursday, April 17th at 6:00pm
In this two-hour poetry workshop, North Carolina Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer will share some of her own work with the participants and then lead the group in a discussion of personal history and utilizing poetry to find a literary voice. Poetry will be used to help participants find their own story, sing it forth, and move on into richer and more attentive lives. Participants will write, share their work, and talk about what it is calling out to them to heed, to preserve, and to celebrate. Sincere Forms of Flattery: Blacks, Whites, and American Popular Music, Thursday, May 1st at 6:30pm
In this 45-minute lecture, Billy Stevens demonstrates how historic interactions between African-Americans and European-Americans shaped the evolution of American popular music. With its roots in slavery and the fusion of musical traditions brought from both Africa and Europe, American music is a natural outgrowth of the unique culture of the American South. From rap stars to rock 'n' rollers, gospel shouters to big band crooners, from Elvis Presley to Stephen Foster, a pattern of contact and conflict between white and black cultures fueled the creation of confluent musical forms recognized worldwide as distinctly American. Using musical instruments as well as rare recordings, Billy helps audiences understand the relationship between jazz and blues, ragtime and gospel, and how the first distinctly American musical genre, blackface minstrelsy, has influenced country musicians up to the present day. The result is a better understanding of how our music reflects America's social fabric, affirming the contributions of performers both famous and forgotten while empowering minority communities often relegated to obscurity.

Spring Break is right around the corner!

Registration is underway for Creation Station's Spring Break Art Camp. All art supplies are included, but please send a snack & drink each day. Campers will explore exotic locations around the world while handcrafting souvenirs from each travel destination. At the beginning of camp, passports will be issued to each camper with all the destinations for the week. At the end of each day, campers will get their passports punched for the destinations that we explored that day. On the last day we will hold an art exhibit and awards ceremony for family and friends.

A special part of Art Camp is creating community artwork. Each day we will work on artwork as a group to donate to our community. Campers will get to decide what type of art they will create and choose which community organization will receive their artwork. This is a special part of camp designed to develop your child's self-esteem through the act of giving back to our community. This is a great opportunity for children to develop leadership skills and to learn to work together as a team.

This program culminates with an awards ceremony where each young artist will receive a Certificate of Achievement in Art and a gold medal. Our grand masterpiece will also finally be revealed. After the ceremony the community artwork will be donated to the local business or organization chosen by the community artists. Once their artwork is on display, children love to show their masterpiece to parents, other family members, and friends. Parents are encouraged to attend the awards ceremony to support their young artist's contribution to our community through art.

Creation Station @ Eye of the Eagle Art Center

Last night we started new classes at Eye of the Eagle Art Center. We had a blast! It was so much fun to meet new friends while we created beautiful masterpieces. The preschoolers in Art Explorers painted a plaque with a snow-covered cabin in the woods. The school-age group enrolled in Community Artists created an outerspace scene with a spaceship, planets, and even glow-in-the-dark stars. It was a great time, and I can't wait to see all the families again next week!
